Fazlur R. Khan received his Bachelor of Engineering Degree in 1950 from the University of Dhaka. His education continued in the United States, where he received a Master of Science Degree in Structural Engineering in 1952, and both a Master of Science in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and a Doctor of Philosophy in Structural Engineering three years later. All of his advanced degrees were from the University of Illinois at Urbana, Illinois.
He joined Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP in 1955, and remained with the firm until his death at age 52. He became Senior Designer with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP his first year there, and finally became Partner in 1970.
Dr. Khan had been responsible for the engineering design of many major architectural projects. He had developed a number of new structural systems for tall buildings, both for reinforced concrete and for structural steel. Among many of the significant tall structures designed by him, three special buildings that stand out are the 714 ft. tall One Shell Plaza building in Houston; the 100-story John Hancock Center in Chicago, one of the world’s tallest multi-use buildings; and the 110-story Willis Tower (formerly known as Sears Tower) in Chicago at 1,451 ft.
He published more than 75 technical papers in engineering and architectural journals on topics relating to the analysis, design, and construction of complex structures.
At Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, he was also an adjunct professor of architecture, where he taught since 1961.
