Ahmad Abdelrazaq is an Executive Vice President of the Highrise Building and Structural Engineering Divisions at Samsung C & T Corporation. Since joining Samsung in 2004, he has been involved in the construction planning and structural design of several local and international projects, including the Burj Dubai Project (as the Chief technical Director), the Samsung Seocho Project in Seoul Korea, the 151 story Inchon Tower, Inchon, Korea, and currently performing pre-construction services on several local and international projects, including the Y22 project in Seoul, Korea, Burj Khalifa 12 & 13, Dubai, UAE, Burj Khalifa 14, Dubai, UAE, Icon Hotel at the Palm, Dubai, UAE, Jumeriah garden City (consists of 3 super-highrise buildings in excess of 100-200 floors), Dubai, UAE and presently participating in the bidding for the construction of several International Highrise Building Projects.
Prior to Joining Samsung, Mr. Abdelrazaq was Associate Partner and Senior Project Structural Engineer with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP in Chicago, where he was engaged in all aspects of structural engineering works, from planning/ feasibility studies to completed construction documents and construction administration. Mr. Abdelrazaq has extensive experience in the design of buildings ranging from complex low-rise buildings to ultra high-rise, and long span structures. Some of the notable and award winning projects during his tenure at SOM included the Burj Dubai Project (Senior Project Structural Engineer), Jin Mao Tower, Tower Palace III, LG Kangnam Tower, LG Art Center, Chicago Place, Hotel Vila Olympica, and the Millennium Park Project.
Presently Mr. Abdelrazaq serves also as a lecturer at Seoul National University, where he teaches a high rise building design course for graduate students. He is also served as an adjunct professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology’s School of Architecture, where his commitment to the development of innovative structural systems is reflected in his research on concrete/steel/composite structural systems, and the shaping of supertall buildings to control their dynamic response to wind excitation. He is also involved in a National Science Foundation grant project to monitor the response of high rise buildings to wind effects, where, this research project resulted in an ASCE State-of-the Art Civil Engineering Award for the paper “Validating Wind-Induced Response of Tall Buildings: Synopsis of the Chicago Full-Scale Monitoring Program” Journal of Structural Engineering, October 2006. Mr. Abdelrazaq is now serving as the Chair of the Tall Buildings committee with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)/SEI, and as a member of the Advisory Group and Editorial Board of the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH).
Mr. Abdelrazaq has published numerous papers on special engineering topics and lectures frequently at universities and international professional organizations and conferences. He pursues a collaborative approach to integrating the architectural and engineering design with construction methods, to achieve a unified, high quality, and economical design to maximize the benefits to the owner. Mr. Abdelrazaq has been instrumental in performing Value Engineering for large and complex building projects in domestic and overseas market, including supertall buildings, without impacting the architectural design concept, but adding value to the project in every aspect.
His published books and research papers in the field of Tall Buildings include:
