SHANGHAI – The CTBUH China Office officially launched March 18 at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) at Tongji University, Shanghai. The eventful day saw the inaugural board meeting of the China Office, with key representatives from the Office’s host, CAUP at Tongji University, and six Founding Sponsors in attendance. It concluded with a spirited reception in the main atrium of the CAUP, which included an unveiling of a special plaque commemorating the role of the Founding Sponsors and host Tongji University, attended by 160 people, including members of the press.
Host
The board meeting set the priorities of the Office for the coming two years. As CTBUH Chairman David Malott, Executive Director Antony Wood, and China Office Director Daniel Safarik explained to the board members, this meeting was a major opportunity to decide where resources should be focused during this initial period.

The group arrived at several firm resolutions during its three-hour session, and batted around many more solid ideas.
China Office's Six Founding Sponsors
The board resolved that one of the major subjects up for discussion, a China-based awards program, would be an excellent use of resources, as it would provide exposure to the many companies involved in the world’s largest tall building market, as well as for the CTBUH. The China awards program would ideally feed into the main annual Best Tall Buildings Worldwide program already run by the CTBUH, but would have some of its own unique recognitions and programming, including a separate ceremony in China, from which winners would pass into the worldwide program as part of the Asia & Australasia region.

One of the main objectives of the China Office is to facilitate translation of English-language print and digital publications into Chinese, and vice versa, with an eye toward expanding not only the number of publications in Chinese, but the net total of publications overall. A precise approach was not decided, but it was resolved that a translation of the top layer of the CTBUH’s massive Skyscraper Center database would be an early, ambitious goal. Wood also expressed the value of, and intention behind, securing a long-term relationship with a China-based publisher, which would ideally carry much of the weight of the translation duties, rather than impose these upon the Office’s small staff. Alternate, or perhaps additional, options included coordinating translation work through the Founding Sponsors’ own staff resources and relying more explicitly on authors to conduct their own translation work.

A third major goal discussed at the meeting was the expansion of CTBUH membership and activity in China, and further into Asia. One of the major roles of the Founding Sponsor representatives will be to introduce the CTBUH to their contacts in the Asian tall building industry, and to assist the China Office team in securing a seventh, and final, Founding Sponsor. Current sponsors hail from diverse backgrounds in the tall building industry, thereby providing well-rounded insights regarding CTBUH operations in the region. There are currently six sponsors representing: Owner/Developer, Agent/Letting/Building Management, Public and Private Architectural/Engineering, and Research. The seventh Founding Sponsor would ideally be a construction company, so as to represent a wide swath of the industry.

The board touched upon other topics, including a focus for CTBUH research activities in China. Suggestions included a program of research that would focus more directly on developers’ interests, such as financing and pro formas, and the expansion of the urban / suburban sustainability study currently underway in Chicago to cities in China, which are expanding at rates unseen in the West. Board members also suggested heavier involvement in CTBUH research initiatives of regional and municipal governments in China, which have a keen interest in engaging with global expertise, and importantly, the capability to fund research on positive urban planning outcomes.

The group also discussed the need for committed support from the major actors in tall building development and construction in the Chinese cities deemed likely to host the 2016 and 2018 CTBUH Conferences. The long-term planning necessary to launch the next Conference in China began immediately after the meeting – the next day Wood traveled to Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou to inspect potential venues for 2016.

The reception featured the sonorous sounds of the traditional gujeng, the pleasant burble of enthusiastic conversation, and a short speaking session that recognized the Founding Sponsor representatives and unveiled the official plaque.

If the turnout and the energy of both the board meeting and reception are any indication of what’s to come, the future of the CTBUH in China is bright.
