DUBAI - From March 9th to the 11th, Marcus Evans Ltd. held their 3rd Annual Vertical Cities conference in Dubai, UAE. Through cutting-edge case study presentations by distinguished industry experts, this conference addressed issues found in city's urban environments, including pollution, urban sprawl and traffic congestion. Presentations from CTBUH Advisory Group Member, Ahmad Abdelrazaq, and representatives of companies such as Perkins+Will and Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecure took up the first two days, before Marcus Evans sent delegates on tours of some of the most recognizable buildings of the Dubai skyline.  Tours of D1 Tower, Almas Tower, and the current tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa provided attendees the opportunity to see some tall urban projects at different levels of completion. A highlight of the presentations, particularly for building owners, was “Trends in Vertical Development: Creating Economic Multipliers”, was given by the Chief Development Officer of Aldar Properties and CTBUH Abu Dhabi Regional Representative, Gurjit Singh.

Gurjit started his presentation explaining current trends in tall building, and the progress that has been made over the past year. Referencing CTBUH’s Tall & Urban analysis, Middle East analysis and 2013’s Tall Building Review, to name a few, Mr. Singh was able to comprehensively and graphically present current tall building statistics on both a global and regional scale. He then proceeded to examine Sun + Sky and the Gate Towers, a development in Abu Dhabi that Mr. Singh was heavily involved in and a finalist of the CTBUH 2013 Award Ceremony. Through this case study, Mr. Singh covered an in depth look into the planning framework for financing and design, building management, as well as construction process for the Gate Shams Abu Dhabi complex.
