Sponsored by Cityzen Development, whose Absolute World Towers, Mississauga won the CTBUH 2012 “Best Tall Building Americas” award, the event centered around a presentation entitled “Canada and the Global Movements in Tall: Trends, Drivers and Challenges” from CTBUH Executive Director Antony Wood.

The session was opened by Richard Witt of Quadrangle Architects, who explained the intentions behind the new Canada Chapter. Witt was followed by Sam Crignano, president of Cityzen Development, who set the development of Absolute Towers in the context of Canada’s tall building boom.

Wood then detailed the evolution of tall buildings, including the spike in 200 meter-plus buildings in the last decade, the change in mix of uses and structural composition, and in the eccentricity of their physical aesthetics. With respect to Canada in particular, Wood noted the rapid acceleration of 200 meter-plus buildings in cities such as Toronto since 2010, currently making it the most active city for tall buildings in the Western hemisphere.

A series of questions followed Wood’s presentation, and the event was concluded with an announcement of the next CTBUH Canada event, a panel discussion entitled “Design, Cost and Return on Investment,” to be held Sept 19. There is additionally a tour of Canada’s future second tallest residential tower, Canderel’s Aura – tentatively scheduled for late July.
