TORONTO - At the beginning of its second year of existence, the CTBUH Canada chapter held its fifth event on January 23 at the University of Toronto Faculty Club. The subject was “Design, Cost and Return on Investment.” Mark Garland of LCL Builds, an officer with CTBUH Canada, moderated the program. More than 80 people representing prominent local developers, architects, engineers and contractors attended the event, which was generously sponsored by Read Jones Christoffersen, a premier structural and civil engineering firm operating nationally across Canada.
The attendees listen to the opening remarks.
Following the introduction by Richard Witt, the CTBUH Canada Chair, the audience was engaged with a pre-recorded video orientation which re-presented content from the CTBUH 2013 International Conference in London. An excerpt from the opening plenary presentation by Peter Wynne Rees, the Chief Planning Officer for the City of London, and a 10-minute video excerpt of The Gherkin (30 St. Mary Axe) case study by Kent Gardner, CEO of Evans Randal, the Gherkin’s owner, were presented.
The panel discussion sparked a lively debate.
A combination panel discussion and presentation of the work of the panelists explored several themes including building efficiencies, floor plate sizes, site constraints and the interrelationships of floorplate size to the building height.

Panelists sought to answer the question, “Is there an enhanced profit return on really great high rise building design?”

The panelists were:
  • John Frank of Hines
  • Jared Menkes of Menkes Developments
  • Mark Cote of Oxford Properties Group
  • Josh Chaiken of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates

John Frank presented numerous office buildings from the Hines portfolio from the 1980s.

Jared Menkes showed off both completed and active high-rise development projects in Toronto, and Mark Cote presented several buildings from the Oxford Properties portfolio. These included the Leadenhall Building in London and the 1021 West Hastings building in Vancouver.

The panel discussion was concluded by Josh Chaiken, who showcased the ICC Tower in Hong Kong, famous for its light shows -- a design element that makes the building famous and desirable to office tenants.

The CTBUH Canada Chapter has been alternating breakfast seminars with construction tours of high rise buildings.  The next scheduled event is a construction tour of the iconic condominium building, L-Tower designed by Daniel Libeskind and under development and construction by Cityzen.  This event will be held on Thursday, February 27.
