TORONTO - The CTBUH Canada chapter hosted a tour of The L Tower, the under-construction iconic residential building in the heart of Toronto’s downtown core, on February 27, 2014. When completed, the building will be 205 meters tall and 58 stories. The hosts were Cityzen’s founding partner and director of development, Sam Crignano, along with Sergio Vacilotto, Ajmal Temor and Anthony Pignetti, all of Dominus Construction. Members of the team were also on hand to provide insight; Jason Jimenez of Studio Daniel Libeskind, Gianni Ria of IBI Group, Paul Ast and Jeff Watson of Jablonsky Ast and Partners and Kevin Sharples of Smith & Andersen Consulting Engineers. The guides gave insights into the project as the group visited several key completed and under-construction areas of the development.
L Tower, Toronto
CTBUH Canada Chapter Chairman Richard Witt of Quadrangle Architects, Secretary Mark Garland of LCL Builds, and Treasurer Michael Montgomery of Kinetica organized and planned the tour, culminating in a discussion with the project team and other attendees at a local pub. Forty people signed up to the tour, and with strong representation from the project team, the attendance was well over 50. A broad cross-section of the tall building community was represented, including leaders from the development, construction, architecture and engineering sectors.
Sam Crignano of Cityzen giving the introduction
After Witt’s brief introduction in the nearby sales center, Sam Crignano gave an introduction to the L Tower and introduced the project team. Cityzen’s management was also kind enough to provide all attendees with branded hard hats, which they could keep. The group went to the main building hoist and split into three smaller groups to visit the top middle and bottom of the tower.

View from the penthouse terrace
The first stop was the 58th floor, converted into a 17,000 square-foot (1579.35 square-meters), two-story penthouse unit with stunning views. The floor is still a bare concrete structure, partially glazed and with a modified structure to accommodate a large terrace on the south side. The post-tensioned beams were also discussed, which, though unusual in Toronto, are required at 15-floor intervals to accommodate the unconventional building form. The group next visited the almost-complete fourth floor, touring two completed condominium suites and several partially complete areas. From here the diverging columns are visible at close intervals. Finally, a view of the ground floor revealed the complexity of a tight site on top of a performing arts center. No underground parking is provided on the site, and the lack of room to move has necessitated the construction of a large turntable to accommodate the movements of service vehicles.

The tour was followed with a hosted bar at the adjacent Tilted Kilt pub, facilitating further discussion and relationship-building among CTBUH members.
The next CTBUH Canada event, a breakfast series panel discussion, is tentatively scheduled for May and will focus on the construction of tall buildings. The next under-construction building tour is being identified now, and will occur in the late spring of 2014.
